The Salvation Army Partners with Safari Club International for Special Sportsmen Against Hunger Community Meal on Jan. 30
The Salvation Army Southern Nevada is once again partnering with the Safari Club International (SCI) Foundation and Sportsmen Against Hunger Committee to provide a wild game community meal. The special Sportsmen Against Hunger meal will feed approximately 1,000 homeless and low-income individuals.
The event will be held inside The Salvation Army’s Lied Dining Facility, located at 35 W. Owens, on Tuesday, Jan. 30, beginning at 2:30 p.m.
The event will kick off the 2018 SCI Convention in Las Vegas.
Since 1989, SCI members have sponsored the Sportsmen Against Hunger program through the SCI Foundation. The program is aimed at partnering with institutions like The Salvation Army and local food banks, giving hunters an opportunity to share a portion of their wild game harvest with the hungry.
Several Nevada hunters will donate approximately 300 pounds of deer and elk for the Jan. 30 meal, with some of the meat being donated directly to John Mull’s Meats in Las Vegas. Hunters and local organizations providing food for those less fortunate at a critical time of year has truly made this a community event.
“The assistance we receive from organizations like SCI Foundation is essential to our success in serving those who need our help,” said Phillip Hollon, Social Services Director at The Salvation Army. “Partnerships like these ensure that homeless and low-income individuals have access to a daily hot meal that’s so critical to their health and well-being. We want to thank SCI for their generosity and support.”
According to the Nevada Homeless Alliance, more than 30,000 individuals experience homelessness each year in Southern Nevada, and one in every six people in Southern Nevada struggle with food insecurity. The Salvation Army Southern Nevada serves approximately 365,000 meals per year to assist in combating this need in our community.
