The performance will open with Astor Piazzolla’s Four for Tango followed by one of the most popular works ever written, Antonio Vivaldi’s Winter featuring guest violinist, Alex Gonzalez. The afternoon performance will conclude with Gustav Mahler’s Eines Fahrenden Gesellen ‘Songs of a Wayferer,’ featuring Canadian soprano, Rachel Krehm.
The collaboration between Astor Piazzolla and the Kronos Quartet has been one to remember. The Kronos Quartet commissioned and premiered Piazzolla’s Four for Tango, which was ultimately released under their 1988 Winter Was Hard album. Since then, the work has become one of the most popular chamber music works today. The music is fierce, vivid, and chilling. The same can be said about Vivaldi’s Winter. As one of the most popular works ever composed, Winter leaves little doubt why many consider Vivaldi to be the original rockstar. Lastly, we arrive at one of Mahler’s most popular lieders, the Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen (Songs of a Wayferer). Mahler began working on this piece during the winter of 1884 and it is by far one of his greatest works depicing his every trait and character.
