United Way and North Las Vegas Police Department Partner for Kids & Cops Back-to-School Shopping Event
United Way of Southern Nevada and the North Las Vegas Police Department (NLVPD) teamed up to host a Kids & Cops back-to-school shopping spree at a North Las Vegas Walmart Supercenter store on September 9, 2010 (Pictured above: Councilman Robert L. A portion of a recent grant from MGM Resorts Foundation, the employee charitable giving program for MGM Resorts helped more than 300 students receive $25 Walmart vouchers to purchase essential school supplies.

At the event, the NLVPD officers distributed the vouchers to students enrolled at Kermit Booker Elementary and the 100 Academy of Excellence School and offered shopping assistance. In addition, Victor Dunn, deputy chief for the North Las Vegas Police Department and Councilman Robert L. Eliason were on site to share their support and enthusiasm for the Kids & Cops program.

In 2003, Kids & Cops was conceptualized by United Way of Southern Nevada President and CEO, Dan Goulet and Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department’s former Sheriff Bill Young to create a positive relationship between local communities and law enforcement officials by providing immediate assistance to children in need. In 2010 alone, more than 2,000 children have shared a moment of happiness with a law enforcement officer because of the Kids & Cops program.
