Vegas PBS Announces 19th Annual PBS KIDS Writers Contest; Students in Grades K-5 are Encouraged to Submit Original Stories with Illustrations
Vegas PBS
is accepting original story submissions for the 2018 PBS KIDS Writers Contest. Stories with illustrations by students grades K-5 will be accepted. All entries must be received by Friday, March 23, 2018 at 5 p.m. to be eligible.

Entries must be mailed or hand-delivered to Vegas PBS Ready To Learn, 3050 E. Flamingo Road, Las Vegas, NV 89121. The writers contest is designed to promote the advancement of children’s literacy skills through hands-on, interactive learning.  Stories will be judged on creativity and originality of plot and themes; story structure and use of literary devices; and relevance, quality and originality of illustrations.

The top three winners in each grade level will be honored at a recognition ceremony at Vegas PBS in which the awardees will learn their placements. First place winners will receive a scholarship to attend the Southern Nevada Writing Project’s Summer Youth Writing Camp, a five-day program allowing students to enhance their talents and build their confidence as storytellers under the guidance of skilled educators who possess a passion for teaching writing. Prizes also include a trophy, framed enlargements of their work and additional reading and writing resources, all sponsored by Janice Allen. All students who enter will receive a personalized certificate to recognize their participation.

“We are proud to continue our tradition of hosting the annual PBS KIDS Writers Contest,” said Vegas PBS Ready To Learn Coordinator Jessica Russell. “One of the greatest benefits of the writers contest is the creative freedom children are granted for their stories. We can’t wait to see what the kids in our community come up with.”
