Yoga Practice Promotes Business Success

Yoga Practice Promotes Business Success
In her book “Effing Simple” and during speaking engagements, Toni Vanschoyck emphasizes the importance of personal development to succeed in business. And she lives that out in her daily life with regular practice of yoga.

Five days a week, Vanschoyck and her two daughters — Naomi, 19, and Catherine, 11  — take a 75-minute Vinyasa class. She shares the passion with her team at premium hair and skincare product company Monat, as well. She has hosted yoga classes on her pool deck, brought yoga teachers in for speaking engagements and hosted events at yoga studios.

Of course Vanschoyck has seen the physical change yoga has made in her family: They are more flexible, stronger and less sore when they exercise; have more stamina and less stress; and have seen an improvement in heart rate and blood pressure. But more than that, she has seen improved focus, especially in Catherine.

“My 11-year-old was all over the place and had trouble focusing. She was a fidgeter,” Vanschoyck said. “But I noticed right away, and so did the owner/teacher at our studio (Trisha at Yoga Daily in Mount Pleasant, S,C.), that within the first two to three weeks, Catherine was fidgeting less, more focused on her school work, focused on doing the task at hand from start to completion. … The great thing about yoga is that it’s not just about the physical. It’s about a mindset and being mindful of your mind.”

The exercise also has applications for business, Vanschoyck said. Yoga is self care, which is part of the personal development every entrepreneur needs for his or her success because “if you’re not giving to yourself, how do you expect to give your full expression to others?” Vanschoyck said.

Yoga is also a practice that is about pushing your limits, which is important in business.

“The one thing yoga practice does every day is it challenges you to force yourself out of your comfort zone. … You say, ‘I can’t do it,’ then you take that one more breath and hold that pose,” she said. “Business is the same. You think you can’t talk to one more person, can’t deal with one more ‘no,’ can’t reach out to one more team member because your day has been filled with negativity. But you always have one more. If you can train your mind like that in your yoga practice, it will carry over to your business. … It’s about being present in the moment and acknowledging that sometimes you may feel like, ‘I can’t do this,’ but that’s a limitation of your mind. In my industry, if you’re not successful, it’s because of a limitation of your mind. So the two really go hand in hand.”
