Blood Drive at Somerset Academy Lone Mountain; CoHosted by Somerset's Teacher Angelo Casino

Somerset Academy Lone Mountain and Angelo Casino for Nevada State Board of Education District 1 are teaming up to host a blood drive to help Vitalant aid the Las Vegas community combat severe blood shortages during this coronavirus outbreak.

WHAT
The need for blood is constant in our hospitals and emergency centers. All blood types are critically needed right now, with an especially high need for type O, A-negative and B-negative red blood cells. As well, COVID-19 survivors have immune-boosting antibodies in their blood that may be the key to a treatment. By donating plasma, people are contributing to vital research that can save lives.

WHERE
Somerset Academy Lone Mountain
4491 North Rainbow Blvd. Las Vegas, NV 89108
Check-in will be in the multi-purpose room.

WHEN
Friday, May 29, 2020
9 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.

WHY
Vitalant in Las Vegas has declared a critical shortage of blood as supplies have been significantly impacted by the coronavirus pandemic. Shelter-in-place orders led to 205 blood drives canceled since early March in Southern Nevada alone, resulting in a loss of 5,438 uncollected blood donations. That, coupled with a resumption of surgeries and other medical procedures as stay-at-home restrictions were lifted, has caused a 25% increase in the need for blood during the past several weeks.

HOW
To book online click on this event direct appointment link and use sponsor code: SALM or call 877-25-VITAL.It is strongly encouraged that people make appointments.

The U.S. Surgeon General and Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) have designated blood donation as an essential activity, encouraging healthy and eligible donors to continue to donate even amidst COVID-19 response measures. From coast to coast, all Vitalant centers continue to deploy strict precautionary measures to ensure the safety of donors, patients and staff, including:

  • Taking donors’ temperatures upon check-in (staff self-monitor their temperatures)
  • Requiring face masks or cloth-based face coverings (donors and staff)
  • Disinfecting donor-touched and other high-touch areas often and after every donation
  • Ensuring social distancing to keep donors and staff safe.
