On Thursday, May 28, 2020, one Virgin Valley High School senior, Alyssa Ponce, was presented with the Bruce King Memorial Scholarship. Board members of the scholarship alongside Mesquite Gaming representatives, presented the graduate with a $6,000 check.

Sine 2013, the Bruce King Memorial Board and Mesquite Gaming have rewarded one Virgin Valley High School senior during the Mesquite Amateur Golf Tournament. In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, the tournament has been postponed to a later date, however this did not deter participants from donating to the scholarship fund allowing Alyssa to begin her college experience with her well-deserved scholarship in hand. Alyssa will be attending Dixie State University this fall and study Computer Science.

The scholarship pays tribute to Bruce King, who participated in the first 10 years of the Mesquite Amateur before passing of cancer in 2012. The Board is made up of Mesquite Amateur participants, Tyler Peak, Todd Peltier, Stan Mahaffey, Tim Riordan, Michael Zepeda, Ryan Pugh and David Derango, who played alongside King and wish to carry out his passion for education.

The 18th annual Mesquite Amateur, a five-day 54-hole, net, stroke play tournament, is slated for June 15-19, 2020. The tournament allows competitors to play three rounds of tournament golf on some of Mesquite’s scenic and award-winning courses located along the northern edge of the Mojave Desert and near the southern edges of the Great Basin.

“With graduation ceremonies being canceled this year, we feel incredibly privileged to award this scholarship to a special and deserving student like Alyssa,” said George Salcedo, president of the Bruce King Memorial Board. “Due to the pandemic delaying the tournament and causing travel restrictions for some golfers, the Bruce King Memorial Board was honored by how many players donated to the scholarship fund. It’s the love that each golfer has for the Mesquite community that makes this possible.”
