CCSD board votes to approve reopening plan

The Clark County School District (CCSD) Board of School Trustees received an update on COVID-19 mitigation and distance education. The presentation, provided by District staff included information on key indicators as requested by the Board of School Trustees, including state and county health data, a summary of student academic information from the first semester of the 2020-21 school year and a recommendation for returning at-risk student groups to face-to-face instruction on a voluntary basis.

“The COVID-19 pandemic continues to be very challenging for education,” said CCSD Superintendent Dr. Jesus F. Jara. “We will continue to make the health and safety of students and staff a top priority. As we continue to look at the academic and health crisis that the pandemic has caused, I believe that the plan proposed provides the first steps in returning our students and educators to the classroom.”

The Board discussed with District staff the role that data will play in returning students to campus. District staff stated that school administration will work with their campus communities to determine the best course of action for which students should be invited to campus on a voluntary basis. Additionally, clarification was given that the model of instruction won’t change, even with small groups returning to campus, and distance education will continue this school year as outlined in the Plan to Transition to Hybrid Instruction Model presented to the board in November 2020.

The Board voted unanimously to approve the Superintendent’s recommendation that schools invite individual or small groups of students back to campus on a voluntary basis to participate in:

  • Social-emotional wellness supports and interventions.
  • Academic screenings, interventions and small-group instruction.

District staff also provided an update on social-emotional programs implemented during the first semester of the school year. The data presented included information from the Lifeline pilot program, Panorama staff survey and the Connection Line that was used over the holiday breaks.
