Construction Begins at Charleston Heights Community Center
City of Las Vegas Ward 5 Councilman Cedric Crear will host the groundbreaking for a high-tech community center and park makeover at Charleston Heights Park Thursday, June 3, at 8:30 a.m. The park is located at 2221 Maverick St.
The project includes construction of a 5,783-square-foot community center with attached 550-square-foot park restroom building, new parking lot, basketball court, new drinking fountain, park renovations, turf areas, landscaping, unique playground equipment, walking paths, site lighting and site improvements for handicapped-accessible concrete walkways.
The planned state-of-the-art community center will include a true tech center. The new community center will provide the infrastructure to accommodate high-tech uses, allowing youth, as well as adults, to create computer games, participate in esports, and produce movies in front of a green screen.
Local youth, along with representatives of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, deputy city marshals, local schools, esports and area churches, provided input into the design of the facility.

“This heavily used older park is ready for a makeover,” said Councilman Crear.
“What a great opportunity to provide the neighborhood with a much-needed community center while we renovate the park. This will be the first park in the city to combine high-tech with recreation, and I believe it could be the model for how parks are designed in the future, as we move into the age of S.T.E.A.M. (science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics).”
Offsite work includes demolition of curb and gutter, installation of new curb and gutter, patch and repair of any offsite asphalt and road base. The park will be closed and fenced off during construction.
The existing park restroom, tennis courts and existing park features will be demolished. However, great care has been taken by the architect KNIT to preserve as many existing trees as possible and to add new landscaping.
Cobblestone Construction is the contractor for this project. Construction is scheduled to take about a year and is budgeted at $5,128,715, funded by the Residential Construction Tax, bonds and the city of Las Vegas General Fund.
