The Venetian Resort Welcomes Chinese New Year With Gilded Art Installation and Lion Dance
The Venetian Resort Las Vegas
offers guests a variety of ways to celebrate Chinese New Year, including an Instagram-worthy art installation, exciting entertainment, and special culinary offerings.

BRUSHED IN GOLD

Transforming the waterfall atrium at The Venetian Resort Las Vegas for Chinese New Year began in early January. To celebrate the Year of the Rat, the 2020 Lunar New Year display features a 2,000-pound golden rodent.

The rat is the first of the 12 Chinese zodiac animals, which has existed since the Qin dynasty, more than 2,000 years ago. “The Chinese zodiac is very deep and very traditional,” said Dana Beatty, executive director of floral operations. “We take the sensitivities of this cultural event very seriously. For example, I consult with a feng shui master in designing each art installation, to make sure we have considered all of the culture’s beliefs and requirements for such a display.”

Conception to completion of the featured rodent in the waterfall atrium took nearly one year. A group of artisans from California handcrafted the 18-foot-tall steel and gold painted rat. In addition, nine playful rats have been installed throughout the resort, including one at The Palazzo tower front desk that sits eight feet tall, as well as an ox, the secret friend of the rat.

A LION DANCE AND FIRECRACKERS TO RING IN THE NEW YEAR

At 3:00 p.m., on Jan. 25, the resort will officially kick off Lunar New Year with the ceremonial lion dance and eye ceremony. The auspicious dance begins at The Venetian’s porte cochere and winds its way through The Venetian lobby and casino, stopping in the waterfall atrium before continuing through The Palazzo casino and lobby, and ending at The Palazzo porte cochere. This exciting and joyful event features firecrackers, and a parade of dancers and drummers in authentic costumes.
