Southern Nevada’s leading construction companies held their 2nd annual Construction vs. Cancer 2019, on Saturday, February 10, presented by Las Vegas Paving, on the grounds of the Silverton Casino. The goal of “Construction vs. Cancer” is a unique fundraising event that provides a free, festive, fair-like atmosphere for young cancer survivors and their families (Photos courtesy of American Cancer Society).

Created specifically for pediatric cancer patients, the event gave Las Vegas children and families an exclusive opportunity to operate heavy machinery, including backhoes, scissor lifts, dump trucks, diggers, and excavators (with supervision). More than 2,000 big and little construction “operators” attended this unique fundraiser for The American Cancer Society.

The inaugural Construction vs. Cancer event, with founding sponsor, Las Vegas Paving, provided funding for pediatric cancer research, and a Patient Navigator at the Children’s Specialty Center of Nevada.“It was such an inspirational day and we are so thankful to the Construction industry and all the volunteers”, said Lori Mendenhall, of Las Vegas Paving. “We enjoyed expanding the event for the families in Las Vegas, and building on our research funding success,” added Mendenhall. Lori was surprised with the Compassion Heart Award, presented by Barrick, for her dedication to advancing career research.

Local entertainment legends and acts including “Take The Stage Las Vegas” and Las Vegas Aerial Angels performing arts company entertained along with games, face painting, food trucks, children swag bags, provided by Las Vegas’ Re-Bath, and exhibits by local first responders, including California Highway Patrol, LVMPD and the Pearl pink fire truck. Kids were also greeted by superhero characters and princesses from Las Vegas Avengers, Critical Care Comics, Las Vegas Ghostbusters, Bark Andre Furry and sports teams from the Las Vegas Aces and Las Vegas Lights Football Club.
