Almost a year after the New Year’s Day Cybertruck explosion, the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department has released a detailed after-action report. The eye-opening development detailed how the blast was “premeditated.”
A Calculated Blast With Potential For Mass Harm
The Cybertruck explosion in Las Vegas report states that the detonation outside the Trump International Hotel was not random. Investigators determined the device had the capacity to “cause mass casualties and extensive structural damage” if detonated in a more vulnerable setting.
The explosion occurred hours after New Year’s Eve events on the Strip and in proximity to a terror attack in New Orleans. This fuelled speculation about an organized attack. Yet the report highlights that this incident was self-actualized, with Matthew Livelsberger identified as the lone actor behind the attack.
Sheriff Kevin McMahill, in a letter included in the report, described the scene. The explosion claimed the suspect’s life, injured six others, and impacted hundreds more who witnessed the chaos firsthand. “On January 1, 2025, a lone actor chose the Las Vegas Strip as his destination to make a very big, very public statement. As a result, he lost his life, six others were injured, and several hundred more were deeply affected by what they witnessed,” the letter read.
Investigators Dug Deep Into The Cybertruck Explosion In Vegas
Upon examining the incident, the report revealed that the suspect had rented the vehicle through the Turo app. He also received in-person instruction on the truck’s operation from the owner. Authorities discovered Livelsberger’s military ID inside the vehicle. Further probe showed that his wife reportedly cited marital strain as a possible motivator.
Law enforcement recovered a manifesto from his phone classified by the Department of Defense. Other items included his internet search history, ChatGPT queries, emails, encrypted notes, and social media posts. Investigators traced his route from Colorado to Las Vegas, charting stops to acquire firearms, fireworks, ammunition, and fuel.
Inside the vehicle, police found camping fuel containers, gasoline canisters, and unexploded commercial fireworks. The use of drones, 3D scans, and advanced forensics helped investigators reassemble the wreckage and locate key components scattered hundreds of feet away. All of these culminated in the painstaking approach the authorities adopted to unravel the Las Vegas cybertruck explosion.
The report also highlighted the shortcomings of personnel in the aftermath of the explosion. It mentioned the limited awareness of lithium-battery fire risks and the insufficient personal protective equipment available to crime scene teams. The document also pointed out the challenges of coordinating advanced forensic tools.

The Las Vegas Police Department’s after-action release deciphered the mystery behind that alarming blast, but it did not stop there. It identified lapses in response and offered recommendations. The document noted strengthened communication among officers, improved training, and enhanced coordination among crime scene analysts.
