A Las Vegas police drone was used to locate a missing child within minutes of a frantic 911 call coming in this month.
Using thermal imaging technology, the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department’s (LVMPD) Drone as a First Responder unit located the child. This led to a safe reunion with the child’s alarmed family.
Vegas Police Drone Finds Missing Child Using Thermal Camera
According to the LVMPD, a family called 911 on January 5 when their child went missing near the intersection of Charleston Boulevard and Fort Apache Road. Within minutes of the call, officers deployed the department’s police drone, equipped with a thermal camera, in Vegas. The device is designed to detect heat signatures from the air.
The remotely piloted drone scanned the area from above and identified what investigators believed was a heat signature consistent with a small child in a nearby backyard. Once the thermal signal was confirmed, the drone pilot relayed the location to dispatchers and ground units.
Thanks to the rapid aerial assessment, officers were guided directly to the child’s location, where the youngster was found safe and unharmed. The quick response prevented what could have been a prolonged search. It also showed how advancing technology is reshaping emergency responses in Las Vegas.
LVMPD Recently Launched The Drone Operation Center
LVMPD’s use of drones in search-and-rescue efforts is part of a broader effort to modernize emergency responses. The department recently launched an advanced drone operations center that enables rapid deployment of aerial units during critical incidents. According to KKLZ, in 2025 alone, LVMPD logged more than 10,000 drone missions as part of its expanding program. This came with expectations that operations could double in 2026. The centralized center enables drones to launch quickly from multiple locations. As a result, authorities reach most calls within minutes and provide real-time video to responders on the ground.
The drone units also feature other capabilities, including high-resolution imaging and live streaming. These help officers assess situations such as active crime scenes, vehicle pursuits, and missing-person cases. By offering a bird’s-eye view, the drones improve safety and efficiency for both officers and citizens.
