First responders and fellow officers are preparing to gather for a candlelight vigil honoring slain Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD) Officer Austin Abdelnabi, whose death during an officer-involved shooting has left the community grieving. The memorial comes days after the 30-year-old officer was fatally shot while responding to reports of an armed man in the southeast Las Vegas Valley.
Candlelight Vigil to Honor Late Officer Austin Abdelnabi
The Injured Police Officers Fund (IPOF) announced that it will host a candlelight vigil at 7 p.m. Friday at Police Memorial Park, 3250 Metro Academy Way, to celebrate Officer Austin Abdelnabi’s life and service. Organizers said remembrance bracelets will be available during the event, with proceeds supporting Abdelnabi’s family. IPOF also said it is the only organization currently authorized to collect donations on behalf of the officer’s loved ones.
The vigil follows two solemn law enforcement processions held earlier in the week after Abdelnabi died from injuries sustained in the line of duty. Fellow officers, emergency responders and members of the public lined portions of the route to pay their respects as his body was transported first from University Medical Center to the Clark County Coroner’s Office and later to a downtown Las Vegas funeral home.
Sheriff Kevin McMahill identified Abdelnabi as the officer killed after police responded Tuesday afternoon to reports of a man allegedly acting erratically while armed near Tropicana Avenue and Mountain Vista Street. According to Metro, Abdelnabi was among the first officers to arrive when the suspect allegedly opened fire in what officials described as an ambush. Officers returned fire, and the suspect was killed.
McMahill praised the officers, firefighters, medical personnel and a Clark County Office of Public Safety sergeant who immediately rendered aid in an effort to save Abdelnabi’s life. I will tell you that I watched some unbelievable heroism by those officers, and there were a number of other people present on scene…” he stated.
Neighbors Remember a Quiet Community Shaken by Tragedy
Per KSNV, residents living near the scene said the normally peaceful neighborhood was transformed by flashing emergency lights, road closures and an overwhelming police response. Donald Brown, who has lived nearby for about a decade, said he immediately noticed something unusual while returning home Tuesday afternoon.
Another resident, Barbara Bowman, said she did not realize the seriousness of the incident until the next morning. “We don’t know what the confrontation was or what happened,” she said. “Very heartbreaking. Just can’t imagine what the families go through.”
Marine Veteran Remembered for Service and Devotion
Before joining the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department in 2023, Abdelnabi served in the United States Marine Corps. During his military career, he was stationed at Camp Pendleton with Weapons Company, 2nd Battalion, 1st Marine Division, and received multiple military decorations for his service.
Originally from South Carolina, Abdelnabi is survived by his parents, siblings, and his wife, Sage. During a news conference, McMahill reflected on the officer’s devotion to both policing and his family. “Austin was also known for talking about how much he loved his wife, Sage,” the sheriff said. “Yesterday, I had to tell her that Austin was killed doing a job that he loved.”
The candlelight vigil is expected to bring together officers, family members, friends, and members of the Las Vegas community as they honor Abdelnabi’s life and recognize his sacrifice in the line of duty.
